Law Study Hall: Integrated Support in Action
Lightning Session Stream 3: Student Engagement Practices

This lightning session reviews an initiative to assist students successfully transition post-enrolment into their faculties. UNSW College, in partnership with the Faculty of Law, has trialled an integrated academic support model to guide first year postgraduate students in their transition to UNSW. The session will include a brief presentation highlighting key elements of this approach and includes a panel discussion with a lecturer and a peer mentor from the Law Faculty at UNSW and language teaching advisors from UNSW College. The Law Study Hall ran from February to December 2024 and will continue in 2025. As a result of the successful implementation of the Study Hall, UNSW College is reviewing if this model could be applied to other disciplines.

Carmel Walsh | Education Professional Language Facilitator
Carmel has been teaching at UNSW College since September 2023 on ELICOS and FCE courses. In February 2024 Carmel started as a Language Advisor on the Law Study Hall and has completed 4 terms assisting the Faculty of Law to support its international students. She has experience teaching English in Australia, Japan, Chile and the UK. Additional she coordinated a teacher training and student counselling course in China. Carmel has also worked as a Director of Research and Educational Information Technology at tertiary and corporate institutions across Australia and the UK.

Tania Bencic | Education Professional Language Facilitator
Tania is a language facilitator at UNSW College with over 20 years of teaching experience. She was the joint winner of the 2018 Action Research Award for a project entitled: ‘Making Connections: Student investigations of their future disciplines within a Direct Entry EAP course’. She also works as a Language Advisor for the Law Study Hall in the Law Faculty at UNSW. Her current interests lie in using student-centred approaches in collaborative learning environments and focusing on the use of integrated teaching approaches to assist students to build critical thinking, communication, research and writing skills essential for academic success.
